Verb aspect: imperfective vs. perfective
Almost every Russian verb comes in a pair — one imperfective (for ongoing, repeated, or unfinished actions) and one perfective (for a single completed action). «Читать» = to be reading (imperf.); «прочитать» = to read [and finish] (perf.).
